💜 Year 6 💜 Another fantastic week of learning in Year 6! In Literacy, we have been working incredibly hard to write our own narratives, inspired by the idea of the legacy we want to create and drawing inspiration from the wonderful Little People, Big Dreams texts. We have now begun publishing our writing and are really looking forward to completing our final outcomes on Monday and seeing all of our hard work come together. In Maths, we have shown fantastic resilience when rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000 and 10,000, tackling increasingly challenging problems and persevering when things became tricky. In Reading, we have continued to immerse ourselves in Freeze, developing our ability to analyse the character of Maya in great detail and using evidence from the text to support and justify our inferences. In Science, we used classification keys to classify plants, applying accurate scientific vocabulary and developing our understanding of how living things can be grouped. In Geography, we have begun to explore the different factors that influence birth and death rates, considering how these vary around the world and have changed throughout history. In Computing, we completed practical tasks involving data packets, helping us to understand how information is broken down and transferred across the internet. In Art, we have continued to develop our collaging skills, with a particular focus on using colour, pattern and composition effectively to create a sense of depth and bring our artwork to life. It has been another busy and productive week, and we are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, resilience and creativity Year 6 have shown across all areas of their learning. 💜 Year 5 💜 We have had another busy and exciting week of learning in Year 5. In Religion & World Views, we have been learning about parables, exploring the messages and meanings behind these stories and thinking about how they can relate to our own lives. We have worked hard preparing for and taking part in our Year 5 assembly. The children have shown great enthusiasm, confidence and teamwork, and we are so proud of the way they have supported one another. Well done, Year 5, for another brilliant week! 💜 Year 4 💜 Year 4 have been exploring the internet this week, researching websites and identifying the difference between a webpage and a website. We have also found similarities and differences between what can be found on various webpages. In PE, we have started to release and receive the ball, working on our weight of pass and which part of the boot is needed to increase accuracy. In Maths, we have gone back in time and learnt about Roman numerals! In Reading, we have begun our writing in diaries where we aim to include fronted adverbials, past tense verbs and personal pronouns. Continuing with our Religion and World Views, we have begun to delve into the meaning of Jesus’s parables and the context behind the Mustard Seed Story. Have a lovely weekend. 💜 Year 3 💜 This week, Year 3 enjoyed a visit to church for our Harvest Festival service, practised our percussion skills, explored how punctuation brings dialogue to life through performance, and continued our learning about place value with numbers up to 1,000. We also had the exciting opportunity to welcome the Year 3s from Red Oak for a series of fun competitions and activities. Thank you to everyone who came along and helped make the event so memorable! 💜 Year 2 💜 What a busy and exciting week we have had in Year 2! In Literacy, we began our new text, Jack and the Beanstalk. To bring the story to life, we planted our very own magic beans and are looking forward to watching them grow over the coming weeks! In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of number by flexibly partitioning numbers to 100 in different ways. We also enjoyed a walk to the church for our Harvest Festival, where we reflected on the importance of being thankful and helping others in our community. In Science, we continued our learning about plants, exploring what they need to survive and grow. Our highlight of the week was undoubtedly our Geography fieldwork trip to the beach. The children were fantastic as they explored the coastline, identified human and physical features, and investigated the different ways people use our coast. It was a wonderful opportunity to bring our classroom learning to life and develop our fieldwork skills. Well done, Year 2, for all your hard work and enthusiasm this week! Have a restful weekend. 💜 Year 1 💜 What an exciting and busy week we have had in Year 1! We started the week with a big surprise when we received CCTV footage showing some unexpected visitors in our classroom... Gingerbread Men! They had kindly left us our new story to explore in Literacy, along with some gingerbread biscuits and icing. Of course, we had great fun decorating our gingerbread men before enjoying the best part... eating them! 🍪 In Literacy, we listened carefully to The Gingerbread Man and then worked together to retell and act out the story, making sure we included the main events in the correct order. The children did a fantastic job remembering what happened and joining in with the repeated parts of the story. We also had an exciting time using the laptops. The children learned how to log on and practised controlling and clicking the mouse. They showed great perseverance when learning these new skills! 💻 In Science, we explored how temperature and daylight affect plants during different seasons. We looked at how a tree changes throughout the year and linked this to what we could see around us. On our walk to church for the Harvest Festival, we spotted leaves beginning to turn orange and brown and recognised this as a sign that Autumn is arriving! 🍂 At church, Year 1 made us incredibly proud. They sat and listened beautifully and joined in with the singing with great gusto! 🎶 We have also enjoyed sharing the amazing homework the children have completed. Thank you for all the support you have given them at home. We are so proud of Year 1 this week. 💜 Reception 💜 What a brilliant week in Reception! This week in Reception, we have been learning to recognise numbers to 5 and developing our subitising skills by spotting quantities without counting. We also enjoyed reading There Is Only One You and talked about what makes each of us unique and special. The children loved exploring the woods, where they worked together, built friendships and developed their team-building skills through a range of outdoor activities. In PE this week, the children took part in an obstacle course to work on team building and coordination. We are so proud of how well the children have worked and supported one another this week. 💜 Nursery 💜 What a lovely week we have had learning about families and the people who are special to us! ❤️ The children have enjoyed talking about their families and sharing photographs and memories from home. We have celebrated how every family is unique and special. During phonics, we became sound detectives! The children carefully listened to sounds made by different animals and used their listening skills to identify mystery sounds. They were brilliant at describing what they could hear and making sensible guesses. In the hall we spun around in the big red cones and practised our fundamental skills. In maths, we practised counting in order and comparing objects by size. The children enjoyed sorting and ordering objects from biggest to smallest and using mathematical language during play. Dough Disco helped us strengthen our fingers by pinching and poking playdough to create fun models. We also enjoyed partner games during physical development, working together and copying each other's movements. In Woodlands, we became safety detectives, learning how to make safe choices outdoors and how to care for ourselves and others while exploring nature. 💜 Year 3 💜 Year 3 have had a very busy week! We have been learning how to represent numbers up to 1000 in Maths, practising our drumming and glockenspiel skills in Music, expanding our emotion vocabulary in PSHE, and exploring a range of ball skills in PE. A reminder that on Monday our Year 3 pupils will be taking part in a PE Invasion Games Workshop. Please ensure children come to school with their PE kit. 💜 Year 2 💜 We have had another fantastic week in Year 2! In Literacy, we proudly published our first piece of writing by rewriting part of the traditional tale The Three Little Pigs. The children worked hard to include the skills they have been learning and were excited to share their finished work. In Maths, we continued developing our understanding of place value, focusing on partitioning numbers to 100 into tens and ones. The children showed increasing confidence in representing and explaining numbers in different ways. In Science, we investigated seeds and bulbs, exploring their similarities and differences and learning how they grow into plants. In Geography, we explored images and maps of our local coastline and identified both human and physical features. The children used their observation skills to recognise the features that make our coastal environment unique. Well done to all the children for another week of fantastic learning! 💜 Year 4 💜 This week Year 4 have been creating art using repeating geometrical and organic shapes to create patterns to mimic the style of Gustav Klimt. Additionally, we have been shedding some light on the scientific phenomena that is light, where we have built simple circuits using cells, wires and bulbs. In football, we looked at turning and moving with speed to evade pressure from defenders - and keeping the ball close to our body. In maths we have continued with place value and have looked at numbers up to 10,000. We have identified the value of each digit and recognising when and how to exchange and regroup when moving through the powers of 10. Finally, for writing, we have been publishing our draft setting descriptions based on our model text, "The Baker by the Sea." Mr Gook & Mrs Longthorne 💜

💜 Year 5 💜 Year 5 have had a wonderful week. In PE, we have been learning Hockey. Developing our teamwork skills and sportsmanship, learning to pass and defend the ball. We have also enjoyed yoga, learning new poses such as warrior three and the mountain pose. We have learnt techniques to improve balance, flexibility and mindfulness. In Literacy, we have looked at punctuating direct speech and relative clauses. As well as developing our "Show Me, Don't Tell Me" technique, helping us to bring our writing to life by describing emotions through actions, expressions and behaviour rather than simply stating how a character feels. 💜 Year 6 💜 Another fabulous week in Year 6! In Literacy, we have been working hard to develop our use of relative clauses, appositives and fronted adverbials, ready to write our own stories inspired by the wonderful Little People, Big Dreams books. In Maths, we have been completing number lines up to 10,000,000, developing our understanding of place value and large numbers. In Reading, we have been immersed in Freeze, making links and predictions across the story and thinking carefully about what might happen next. In Art, we have thrown ourselves into the work of Sarah Graham, exploring collage composition and mixed-media techniques through our wrapper tasks, experimenting with colour, texture and composition. In RWV, we discussed why the Gospels are important to Christians and explored their significance within the Christian faith. During Yoga, we have been discussing the importance of using breathing techniques to support our flow, helping us to move with greater control, focus and awareness. In Football, we have been developing our dribbling techniques and working on controlling the ball with confidence. In PSHE, we discussed our dreams for the future and identified steps and goals we can focus on to achieve these. Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who donated for Jeans for Genes Day. 💜 Year 1 💜 This week in Year 1, we have been busy across the curriculum! In Maths, we practised counting on from any number to 10 to improve our fluency. In Computing, we learned what technology is, sorted objects into technology and non-technology, and went on a technology hunt around the classroom. In Outdoor PE, we developed our rolling skills, focusing on control and accuracy. In Science, we explored how the changing seasons affect us, including the clothes we wear, our sleep and the activities we enjoy. We have also been working hard in Phonics, revisiting sounds. Please keep an eye on our classroom window to see what sounds we have practised that day. We can already see the children's confidence growing in our reading sessions. Have a wonderful weekend! 💜 Reception 💜 What a fantastic week we have had in Reception! This week, the children enjoyed exploring the story "That's My New Friend". Through our discussions, we talked about what makes a good friend, how we can show kindness to others, and what we should do if someone is being unkind. The children shared some thoughtful ideas and demonstrated a growing understanding of friendship, empathy, and respect. In Maths, we revisited subitising numbers 1, 2, and 3, helping the children to recognise quantities quickly and confidently without counting each object individually. In Phonics, we learned our new sound, "a", and practised forming it using the phrase "around the head and down the body." The children have worked hard to recognise, say, and write this new sound. We are incredibly proud of how well the children are settling into Reception. They have had a wonderful week full of learning, laughter, and new experiences, and their confidence continues to grow each day. Have a lovely weekend from the Reception Team! 💜

💜 Nursery 💜 We have had another wonderful week of learning in Nursery! This week the children have continued building their confidence and independence, enjoying opportunities to share ideas, make choices and develop new friendships. In phonics, we explored the sounds all around us during an outdoor sound walk. The children listened carefully for different sounds in the environment and enjoyed playing hidden sound games, using their listening skills to identify sounds without seeing what was making them. In maths, we focused on number names through songs, rhymes and practical activities. The children loved counting together and using number language during their play. We continued to strengthen our fine motor skills during Dough Disco by rolling playdough into long and short snakes and worms. We explored big movements in the hall using the slide cone. During our Woodland session, we linked our learning to Owl Babies, looking for animal habitats and creating owl nests using natural materials. The children showed fantastic imagination and teamwork! 💜 Year 6 💜 What a fantastic start to the new school year! It has been wonderful to welcome our Year 6 pupils back and see them settling in so brilliantly. We have already had a busy and exciting week filled with lots of learning, exploration and fun! In Literacy, we have begun exploring the wonderful Little People, Big Dreams texts, immersing ourselves in the lives, achievements and legacies of a range of inspirational people. In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of place value, working with numbers up to 10,000,000 and strengthening our mathematical thinking. We have also become immersed in our new Reading text, Freeze, and are already enjoying getting to know the story and its characters. In Science, we explored the importance of classification and why scientists need to organise and group living things. In Geography, we investigated how the global population is changing and began to consider the reasons behind these changes and their impact. In PE, we completed our first football and yoga sessions, developing our physical skills, coordination, teamwork and wellbeing. We are also getting ready to start our exciting new Art unit and would really appreciate your help! 💜 Year 5 💜 We have had a brilliant start to the new school year in Year 5 and have been working hard across the curriculum. In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of place value and exploring numbers in greater depth. In Literacy, we have been building our figurative writing skills, using exciting language to make our writing more engaging and imaginative. 💜 Year 4 💜 Year 4 have settled back into school in amazing fashion - they have shown every value Westwood has to offer, and then some! This week we have started our place value unit in Maths, understanding and representing numbers up to 10,000. We have focussed our reading on a book titled The Tear Thief and the impression we have based on her actions. In Literacy we are working towards writing setting descriptions, using figurative language created from seaside images. We have kicked off our PE with our football unit, where we have begun looking at our close ball control and how to manipulate and move the ball using different parts of our feet. For Art we have begun studying the work of Gustav Klimt where we have created some artwork inspired by his famous piece the Tree of Life. Alongside this, in PSHE we have looked at inclusion and considering the needs and wants of others by creating a shared theme park! Enjoy your weekend! 💜 Mr Gook & Mrs Longthorne
