💜 Year 6 💜 What a fantastic start to the new school year! It has been wonderful to welcome our Year 6 pupils back and see them settling in so brilliantly. We have already had a busy and exciting week filled with lots of learning, exploration and fun! In Literacy, we have begun exploring the wonderful Little People, Big Dreams texts, immersing ourselves in the lives, achievements and legacies of a range of inspirational people. In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of place value, working with numbers up to 10,000,000 and strengthening our mathematical thinking. We have also become immersed in our new Reading text, Freeze, and are already enjoying getting to know the story and its characters. In Science, we explored the importance of classification and why scientists need to organise and group living things. In Geography, we investigated how the global population is changing and began to consider the reasons behind these changes and their impact. In PE, we completed our first football and yoga sessions, developing our physical skills, coordination, teamwork and wellbeing. We are also getting ready to start our exciting new Art unit and would really appreciate your help! Please save and bring in sweet, chocolate, confectionery, ice cream and crisp wrappers for us to use in our artwork. Please ensure that none of the wrappers have contained nuts. 💜 Year 5 💜 We have had a brilliant start to the new school year in Year 5 and have been working hard across the curriculum. In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of place value and exploring numbers in greater depth. In Literacy, we have been building our figurative writing skills, using exciting language to make our writing more engaging and imaginative. In PE, we have enjoyed taking part in both hockey and yoga, developing our teamwork, coordination and wellbeing. Well done to all of Year 5 for such a positive and enthusiastic start to the year. 💜 Year 4 💜 Year 4 have settled back into school in amazing fashion - they have shown every value Westwood has to offer, and then some! This week we have started our place value unit in Maths, understanding and representing numbers up to 10,000. We have focussed our reading on a book titled The Tear Thief and the impression we have based on her actions. In Literacy we are working towards writing setting descriptions, using figurative language created from seaside images. We have kicked off our PE with our football unit, where we have begun looking at our close ball control and how to manipulate and move the ball using different parts of our feet. For Art we have begun studying the work of Gustav Klimt where we have created some artwork inspired by his famous piece the Tree of Life. Alongside this, in PSHE we have looked at inclusion and considering the needs and wants of others by creating a shared theme park! Enjoy your weekend! 💜 Mr Gook & Mrs Longthorne

💜 Year 3 💜 This week, Year 3 have been busy exploring numbers within 100 in Maths, making predictions in Literacy, and learning all about plants in Science. 💜 Year 2 💜 This week in Year 2, we have had a fabulous first full week back and the children have settled brilliantly into their learning. In Literacy, we began immersing ourselves in our new text, The Three Little Pigs, exploring the story and getting to know the characters and events. In Maths, we started our learning on place value, building confidence with numbers and understanding their value. In Art, we learned about collage techniques and explored the work of our focus artist, Cecil Touchon, creating our own inspired pieces. In Science, we investigated the life cycle of a plant and discovered how plants grow. In Geography, we learned about the seven continents and five oceans, developing our understanding of the world around us. In RWV, we began learning about Christianity, exploring what Christians believe and why their faith is important to them. 💜 Year 1 💜 What a busy week we have had in Year 1 settling into the classroom routines! The children have enjoyed listening to and performing The Little Red Hen, bringing the story to life through drama and storytelling. In Maths, they practised counting and representing numbers in different ways, while in PE they developed their jumping skills through a range of fun activities. In RWV, the children learned about Christianity and sorted objects and places into Christian and non-Christian groups. In PSHE, they had thoughtful discussions about what makes each person unique and celebrated the special qualities that make us all different. 💜 Nursery 💜 What another fantastic week we have had in Nursery! This week we have continued getting to know each other and becoming more confident in our Nursery environment. The children have been talking about themselves, making new friendships and becoming familiar with our daily routines. In phonics, we have been practising our listening skills by using our "listening ears" and taking part in sound hunts around Nursery. We listened carefully to environmental sounds and enjoyed guessing mystery sounds. The children were excellent at talking about what they could hear and where the sounds might be coming from. Our maths learning focused on recognising numbers and exploring number names through songs and games. We also sorted natural treasures such as shells, leaves, pebbles and conkers, discussing which objects belonged together and why. The children have been strengthening their hands during Dough Disco by squashing, squeezing and rolling playdough. They also enjoyed exploring different body sounds and moving in a variety of ways during our physical development sessions. We were especially excited to visit Woodlands for the first time, learning how to stay safe, listen carefully and respect nature. 💜 We are back! 💜 What a fantastic first two days back at Westwood! We have loved being reunited with our friends, welcoming new members of our family and sharing lots of smiles and stories. Across the school, the children have enjoyed listening to stories, taking part in maths activities, taking part in challenges and creating written responses to questions for our special Westwood Book of 'Just Because'. Some classes have explored the woods, others have created imaginative artwork and we have all played games, and spent time learning together. It has been wonderful to see such enthusiasm, confidence and teamwork from everyone. We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead! 💜 Please note: We haven't included photos from Reception in this post as we are waiting on photo permission forms for some of our new children. Please return these to the school office as soon as possible so we can share their photos next week! 💜

We were saddened to hear of the passing of the wonderful Dolly Parton, who has previously been one of our Musicians of the Month. Dolly’s legacy went far beyond music. Her love of books and belief in the importance of reading led her to create the Imagination Library, helping millions of children discover the magic of stories. As we remember Dolly, it feels like a lovely time to look forward to welcoming our children back to Westwood on 3rd September, ready for another year of music, books, stories and learning. 💜 And don’t forget, our Free Breakfast Club will be ready to welcome children too, a great way to start the school day! 💜 Uniform - New to You 💜 Our New to You rail will be out on the front playground every day this week - it is stocked with jumpers, cardigans, shorts, trousers, skirts, dresses ranging from age 2-3 to 13+ There is also a large collection of coats in various sizes, as well as a box of accessories, including hats and gloves. Please come along and help yourself to what you need, ready for the children's return to school on Thursday 3rd September 💜

💜 THANK YOU 💜 We had another brilliant Community Volunteering Day yesterday with lots of progress made in our woods, car park and some spaces inside school too! Huge thank you to... 💜 Miss Trussler & Miss Bow who gave up a day of their holidays and worked so hard in our woods. 💜 Mrs Hearth from The Active Learning Trust Central Team for lending a hand for a couple of hours and doing lots of heavy lifting! 💜 Patrick from Read Property Maintenance Services & Matt from Armultra Ltd who helped clear lots of the bramble from the woods as well as roots from the car park to create our new bin storage area 💜 Peter from our local community - who has kindly offered to volunteer more hours during the Autumn term to continue the work in the woods 💜 Stuart from Aviva who transformed many spaces within school as well as painting the exterior walls of the building It was wonderful to see members of our community and further afield come together to improve the grounds and facilities for the children - we can't wait for you to see all our hard work! 💜

Thank you so much to everyone who came along to our first Community Volunteering Day! We had such a productive day and have made great progress clearing the overgrown side of our woodlands... The children are going to love using this space! There is still more to be done so we will be hosting another Community Volunteering Day on Wednesday 19th August from 10am and we really hope to see even more of you here! Special thank you to Marty & Grandma from Circus Ferrell for giving up their day to work alongside us and for supplying lots of tools (and Viennetta!) 💜

💜 Reception 💜 This week, Reception class met their new teacher, Miss Pearce and spent the day in Year 1 ready for September. We have spent the.rest of the week having lots of fun in the garden. We finished the week with a Pirate day, where we walked the plank, made a pirate ship, followed a treasure map and found some gold! Finally, we finished the school year with a special picnic with our families. Thank you so much for our lovely cards and presents. We hope you all have a fantastic summer break. 💜 Nursery 💜 What an amazing year it has been in Nursery! Being a child's first teacher is such a privilege, and we feel incredibly lucky to have been part of these children's early learning journey. Throughout the year, they have shown resilience, determination, kindness, humour, and a real love of learning. We have loved watching their confidence grow and getting to know their wonderful and unique personalities. From laughter-filled days to proud learning moments, every child has made this year so special. 💜 Reception 💜 A wonderful penultimate week in Reception. The children have immersed in the 'Rumble in the Jungle' story and have enjoyed creating their own guess the animal pieces of writing. In Maths we have been subtracting and finding one less than amounts using cubes and counters. We have enjoyed a water safety assembly by the RNLI which has reminded us how to keep safe in and near water. Outside in the garden we have enjoyed lots of water play, obstacle courses and fun in the sand pit. Next week, the children will spend Monday with their new teacher in the Year 1 classroom and will spend the remainder of the week in Reception having lots of end of term fun. Have a great weekend! 💜 Years 1 & 2 💜 This week, Key Stage 1 visited the beach as part of our Geography unit, "Is Lowestoft a Wonder of the World?" The children had a fantastic time exploring the beach and sea, looking at the features of our coastline and talking about what makes Lowestoft special. They also enjoyed building sandcastles and working together in the sand. Well done, KS1, for being such enthusiastic explorers!
